I first met Luana in Brownies.  My aunt  Polly was the Brownie Director and Lany's mom was her co-worker.  My aunt Polly liked both she and her mom a lot and made a point to introduce us one summer at Brownie camp.  We didn't see much of each other for a lot more years because she was a Dean Morgan girl and I went to East.  We got together again in high school.  The most vivid memory including Lany I have is of one very cold, winter night our sophomore when we went to the movie downtown.  I had been in a hurry to get dressed and forgot to put on a bra.  I had on a white cotton shirt with a big fuzzy sweater and a coat but I felt so exposed!  I remember trying not to take off my coat - until it just got too hot.  I just knew everyone knew I wasn't wearing a bra!!  (It never occurred to me that no body cared...) Those were the days...  Now it's an unusual day if I wear one at all.  Our youth was such  different time.

On the 8th day of the 8th month of 1968 in Laramie, WY Lany and I had 8 pound boys.  Another lady had an 8 pound boy that day also and we all named them Jason.  We knew nothing about the same name until the nurses said, "Here's another Jason mother".  Lany named her son Jason for Jason and the Argonuts.  I chose the name from Jason Robarts, the movie star and the other gal, being  ranch gal named hers Jason because it sounded like  good cowboy name.  We made the papers and the story was picked up by the wire service and went all over the country.  Prior to that, there were very few Jasons.  Try to think of a Jason older than 44!    We will take credit for bringing that name's popularity.  Lany and I baby sat for each other all the next year while we attended U of W.  We got the boys together a few times later on but I had lost track of them until I got this list.  I am very sorry that she is gone.

Carolee Horstman ((Carlson))

Since 8th grade Lani and I were best friends.  She and Denny Tangeman were married on Sept. 11, 1965.

Their travels and careers in education took them all over the world; beginning in approx. 1970 in Kabul, Afghanistan,

Bangkok, Thailand (where they raised their two boys, Jason and Colin), .  They were in Cheyenne for a few years, but the longing for foreign soils took over.  In their career resumes were years in Warsaw, Poland, Madrid, Spain, Rome, Italy, Guatemala,South America,  Canberra, Australia, Lahore, Pakistan and finally spending summers in a home they purchased in Laramie, Wyoming. Jason and his family are in Laramie where he is a lawyer. She adored her two grandsons.  She drew an alphabet coloring book for them with the different words for each object from all the various languages she had learned or was quite familiar with from her teaching years.

Lani was in poor health for many, many years. In beautifully scripted letters to me she described some of her treatments; they ranged from heart issues, thyroid troubles, fibermyalgia, to arthritis, asthma and severe allergies. She was in a wreck on her way to Fort Collins in 2007.  It was not her fault, but I was there to help her in her recovery.  She had an injured ankle and needed a pin placed surgically in her hand.  Dennis had returned to his work in Lahore, Pakistan. I truly can explain that she had many issues with her health; at that time and effects of past surgeries.  I sat beside her as she filled out her health history before the hand surgery; it was a long, involved dialogue. She knew smoking was her toughest challenge, but 'it' had a deep hook in her.   Her medications alone were very massive. In spite of her physical decline, Lani remained dedicated to her art, and I don't doubt that Dennis could hold an art exhibit at UW with just her intricate designs, internationally inspired works alone.

Lani was not herself the last time we spoke and I was not able to go see them in Laramie as Dennis needed to shorten their summer vacation  due to her fragile status. They returned to Lahore where she had her cooks, doctors, drivers, armed guards and full time help.  She passed that Nov. 2011.

May she rest in peace .  Always she had a funny spin on life and was a great orator, author, artist and confidant.  Lani Joines Tangeman is desperately missed by this friend,. Carolee
